Bowing is the standard greeting in Korea. A slight nod (15Β°) for casual greetings, a deeper bow (45Β°) for formal situations or showing respect to elders. When giving or receiving objects (especially to elders), use both hands or support your right arm with your left hand.
Always remove shoes when entering Korean homes, many traditional restaurants, and temples. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance β that's your cue!
Age matters deeply in Korea. One of the first questions Koreans ask new acquaintances is their age (λμ΄κ° μ΄λ»κ² λμΈμ?) to determine the appropriate speech level. The older person leads: they eat first, drink first, and you use polite speech with them.
When drinking with elders, turn your head away while taking a sip. When someone older pours you a drink, hold your glass with both hands. You pour for others, never for yourself.
| Holiday | Korean | When | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lunar New Year | μ€λ (Seollal) | Jan/Feb (Lunar) | 3-day holiday: μΈλ°° (formal bow), λ‘κ΅ (rice cake soup), family gatherings |
| Harvest Festival | μΆμ (Chuseok) | Sept/Oct (Lunar) | 3-day holiday: ancestor rituals, μ‘νΈ (rice cakes), family reunions |
| Children's Day | μ΄λ¦°μ΄λ | May 5 | Parks and amusement parks are packed β gifts and outings for kids |
| Korean Thanksgiving | νκΈλ | October 9 | Celebrates the creation of Hangul by King Sejong |
| Christmas | ν¬λ¦¬μ€λ§μ€ | December 25 | Public holiday β more of a couples/date holiday than family |
These are Korea's two biggest holidays. Traffic is extreme (everyone goes to their hometown), and most businesses close. During μ€λ , children perform μΈλ°° (deep formal bow to elders) and receive μΈλ±λ (money in envelopes). During μΆμ, families visit ancestors' graves and make μ‘νΈ together.
