Three hours, one hundred and four questions, and a single number at the end. For many learners TOPIK II is the moment when months of study turn into something a university, an employer or an immigration office can read. The good news: you already know the Korean this exam tests. Reported speech, -๋-, passives, ํ๋ค์ฒด, headlines, graphs, opinion essays โ every one of those lessons was quietly TOPIK training. What this capstone adds is the exam craft: how the paper is built, what each question type is really asking, where the points are, and how to plan your time before and during the test.
This lesson describes the paper-based TOPIK II as it has run for years. Formats, timings and rules do change โ and there is now an internet-based test (TOPIK IBT) in some countries, with its own format, plus a separate speaking test. Before you register, confirm the current format, dates and rules on the official TOPIK website, topik.go.kr.
TOPIK II is a single exam that awards level 3, 4, 5 or 6 depending on your total score. There is no separate "level 3 test": everyone sits the same paper, and the easier early questions are exactly where level-3 candidates earn most of their points. That changes how you should think about it โ you are not trying to answer everything, you are trying to collect enough points.
| Session | Section | Questions | Time | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1๊ต์ | ๋ฃ๊ธฐ (listening) | 50 (multiple choice) | 60 min | 100 |
| ์ฐ๊ธฐ (writing) | 4 (51โ54) | 50 min | 100 | |
| 2๊ต์ | ์ฝ๊ธฐ (reading) | 50 (multiple choice) | 70 min | 100 |
| Total | 3 hours | 300 | ||
| Level | Total score | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| 3๊ธ | 120+ | B1 โ the goal of lessons 1โ14 |
| 4๊ธ | 150+ | B2 โ the goal of this whole tier |
| 5๊ธ | 190+ | C1 |
| 6๊ธ | 230+ | C2-ish |
Level 3 needs 40% of the total; level 4 needs 50%. You can miss half the paper and still get 4๊ธ. That's why strategy matters: every minute spent agonising over the final, hardest reading passage is a minute not spent securing easier points.
The fifty listening questions run roughly from easy to hard. The exact numbering shifts from year to year, but the shape is stable:
| Stage | Typical task | What it tests |
|---|---|---|
| Opening questions | Choose the picture or graph that matches a short dialogue; choose the next line; choose what the woman will do next | Everyday situations, reported information, ํด์์ฒด dialogue |
| Middle | Choose the statement that matches the content; identify the speaker's main idea | Workplace and public-facility talk (Lessons 13โ14), inference (Lesson 4) |
| Later (paired questions) | Two questions per recording: interviews, lectures, documentaries, debates โ the speaker's attitude, purpose, main claim | Formal speech, ํ์ญ์์ค์ฒด, Sino-Korean vocabulary, argument structure |
Read ahead. Use every pause โ including the instructions โ to read the next question and its options. Knowing that the question asks "what will the man do next?" tells you what to listen for.
Listen for the turn. The answer often comes after ๊ทธ๋ฐ๋ฐ, ํ์ง๋ง, ๊ทธ๋์ or ๊ทธ๋ฌ๋๊น โ the moment the speaker shifts from background to point.
Main-idea questions want the speaker's opinion, not a fact they mentioned. Listen for -์์ผ ํ๋ค, -๋ ๊ฒ์ด ์ค์ํ๋ค, -(์ผ)๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ๋ค (Lesson 22).
Never chase a missed question. You cannot rewind. Mark your best guess immediately and get ready for the next recording.
Four questions, worth very different amounts. The commonly published split is:
| Q | Task | Length | Points | Suggested time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 51 | Fill two blanks (ใ , ใก) in a practical text: notice, email, message | One sentence each | 10 | 5 min |
| 52 | Fill two blanks in an explanatory paragraph | One sentence each | 10 | 5 min |
| 53 | Describe a graph or chart | 200โ300 characters | 30 | 12โ15 min |
| 54 | Opinion essay on a social issue | 600โ700 characters | 50 | 25โ28 min |
Both are about reading the text around the blank. Ask two questions: what does the logic demand (a reason? a contrast? a request?) and what register is the text in? A notice or email in 51 usually uses -์ต๋๋ค/-(์ผ)ใ ๋๋ค or polite ํด์์ฒด, and your sentence must match it. The paragraph in 52 is in ํ๋ค์ฒด, so your sentence must be too โ a single -์ in 52 costs points.
| Text | Blank | Good answer | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
Question 53 is the most formulaic part of the exam โ which makes it the best return on your study time. The structure is almost always the same: who was surveyed โ the main results โ a change or comparison โ reasons or outlook, all in ํ๋ค์ฒด. Learn this phrase bank until it is automatic:
| Function | Korean | English |
|---|---|---|
| Introduce the survey | N์/๋ฅผ ๋์์ผ๋ก N์ ๋ํด ์กฐ์ฌํ์๋ค. | A survey was conducted of N on N. |
| Report results | ์กฐ์ฌ ๊ฒฐ๊ณผ, N์ด/๊ฐ N%๋ก ๊ฐ์ฅ ๋๊ฒ ๋ํ๋ฌ๋ค. | According to the results, N was highest at N%. |
| Rank the rest | ๊ทธ ๋ค๋ฅผ ์ด์ด N(์ผ)๋ก ๋ํ๋ฌ๋ค. | โฆ followed, at N. |
| Change over time | N๋ N์์ N๋ N(์ผ)๋ก ์ฆ๊ฐํ์๋ค / ๊ฐ์ํ์๋ค. | Rose / fell from N in (year) to N in (year). |

Sample prompt (fictional data): a graph shows how 300 office workers in their twenties spend their time after work โ exercise 35%, watching videos 30%, self-improvement 20%, other 15% โ and a second chart shows self-improvement rising from 10% in 2015 to 20% in 2025, with two reasons given (changing views of lifetime employment; more online courses).

The Korea Institute surveyed 300 office workers in their twenties about their leisure activities after work. The survey showed "exercise" highest at 35%, followed by "watching videos" at 30% and "self-improvement" at 20%. In particular, responses of doing self-improvement doubled in ten years, from 10% in 2015 to 20% in 2025. Causes of this change include a shift in attitudes towards lifetime employment and the growth of online courses. This trend is expected to continue.
Don't give your opinion. 53 is a description task. ์ ๋ ์ด๋์ด ์ข๋ค๊ณ ์๊ฐํ๋ค has no place here.
Don't copy the prompt's title word for word as your whole first sentence โ rephrase it into the survey frame.
Use every piece of information the prompt shows. If it gives two reasons, both must appear.
You met this in Lesson 22. The prompt usually introduces a social issue and asks two or three sub-questions (why is X important? what problems arise? how can we solve them?). Examiners reward answering every sub-question in order, clear paragraphs and ํ๋ค์ฒด with B2 connectives.
| Part | Job | Sample sentence (prompt: the rise of single-person households) |

Answers to 53 and 54 are written on squared manuscript paper. Each Hangul syllable, each space and each punctuation mark takes one square; start each new paragraph by leaving the first square blank. Practise on printed ์๊ณ ์ง at least a few times โ counting characters is much easier when you can see the squares, and answer sheets typically mark every hundred squares, so you can see at a glance when you have passed 600.
Fifty questions in seventy minutes is about 84 seconds per question โ but the early questions take twenty seconds and the late ones take three minutes. Again, the shape is easy to hard:
| Stage | Typical task | Lesson link |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Choose the grammar that fits a blank; choose an expression with a similar meaning; what is this ad or notice about? | The whole grammar arc (Lessons 2โ20) |
| Earlyโmiddle | Match a graph or notice to a statement; put sentences in order; infer a blank | Connectives (Lesson 22), 53-style language |
| Middle | Interpret a news headline; choose the main idea | Headline style (Lesson 21), idioms (Lesson 24) |
| Later | Where does this sentence fit? Longer editorials, essays and literary excerpts: the writer's attitude, a character's feeling, the purpose of the text | ํ๋ค์ฒด, Sino-Korean roots (Lesson 23), -๋- (Lesson 17) |
Question first, passage second. Know what you're hunting for before you read.
Grammar blanks: test each option. Many distractors are grammatically possible but break a restriction you've learned โ -๋๋ผ๊ณ with a positive result, -์์ before a command, -๋- with a first-person feeling.
Main-idea questions: the answer usually paraphrases the last sentence or the sentence after ๊ทธ๋ฌ๋ฏ๋ก/๋ฐ๋ผ์/์ฆ. An option that is merely true but not central is the classic trap.
Ordering questions: find the sentence that can't be first (it starts with ๊ทธ๋์, ์ด๊ฒ์, ๊ทธ ๊ฒฐ๊ณผ) and chain from pronouns and connectives.
Budget your time. Aim to reach the halfway point with well over half your time left.
| Section | Sample 3๊ธ plan (120) | Sample 4๊ธ plan (150) | Where the points come from |
|---|---|---|---|
| ๋ฃ๊ธฐ | 45 | 55 | Secure almost all of the early questions; half the middle |
| ์ฝ๊ธฐ | 45 | 55 | Same pattern; don't sink time into the last passages too early |
| ์ฐ๊ธฐ | 30 | 40 | 51โ52 fully, a solid 53, an organised 54 even if not perfect |
| Total | 120 | 150 |
These are illustrations, not rules โ the exam only cares about the total. But they show the key insight: writing is the lever. Many candidates barely prepare 53 and 54 and leave twenty or thirty points on the table. A memorised 53 template and a practised 54 structure are the fastest way from 3๊ธ to 4๊ธ.

Ahead of exams, many test-takers stay up all night studying. However, experts warn that cutting back on sleep can actually harm your score. That is because our brains organise and store what we learned during the day while we sleep. So if you don't sleep enough, you easily forget even what you studied hard. Also, when you are short of sleep your concentration drops, making it easy to make mistakes during the exam. On the day before an exam, rather than studying new material, it is better to lightly review what you have already studied and go to bed early.
This is a textbook TOPIK passage: a common belief, then ๊ทธ๋ฌ๋, the expert view, reasons with -๊ธฐ ๋๋ฌธ์ด๋ค, ๋ฐ๋ผ์, and a recommendation at the end. The last sentence is the main idea โ exactly what a ์ค์ฌ ์๊ฐ question would ask for.
๐ Cultural note: In Korea, exam season comes with rituals. People give test-takers ์ฟ (sticky taffy) and ์ฐน์๋ก (sticky rice cakes) so the answers will "stick" โ ๋ถ๋ค means both "to stick" and "to pass" โ and, as you learned in Lesson 24, they avoid ๋ฏธ์ญ๊ตญ before the exam. You may find a friend handing you some ์ฟ before your TOPIK day.
ํด์์ฒด in 52, 53 or 54. Written answers must be in ํ๋ค์ฒด (์ค์ํ๋ค, ๋๊ณ ์๋ค, ๊ฒ์ด๋ค). Mixing in -์ is one of the most common and costly errors.
Spending 40 minutes on 51โ53. 54 is worth half the writing score. Keep 25 minutes for it no matter what.
Leaving 54 blank. An unfinished but organised essay still earns points; a blank one earns none. If time is short, write the introduction and one body paragraph.
Spoken forms in writing. ๊ทผ๋ฐ, ๋๋ฌด (in the neutral "very" sense), ๋๊ฒ, -๊ฑฐ๋ ์ and ํด ๋ฒ๋ ธ๋ค read as casual. Use ๊ทธ๋ฐ๋ฐ/๊ทธ๋ฌ๋, ๋งค์ฐ, ์์ฃผ.
Leaving multiple-choice answers empty. There's no penalty for guessing wrong on the paper-based test, so never leave a bubble blank.
Studying only what's comfortable. Doing reading drills because you like reading won't move the score if writing is your weakest section.
Q1: What total score do you need for TOPIK II level 4?
Q2: Which sentence belongs in a question 53 answer?
Q3: You have 12 minutes left in the writing section and haven't started 54. What is the best move?
Q4: Where should you check the current TOPIK format, dates and rules before registering?
If you have worked through all 26 lessons of this tier, aim for 4๊ธ โ the whole tier was built around it. If you finished only the B1 lessons (1โ14) or your mock tests are below 110, target 3๊ธ first. Many learners take TOPIK II twice: once to get level 3 and learn the exam, again for level 4.
That depends on what is offered where you live and what the institution you're applying to accepts. The IBT is taken on a computer and has its own format and question counts, so if you choose it, practise with its official sample materials. Check both options on topik.go.kr.
Examiners need to read your answer, so write clearly and at a steady size in the squares. Neatness matters more than beauty. Practise on real ์๊ณ ์ง so you get used to one syllable per square.
Scores are generally treated as valid for two years from the results date, but the institution receiving your score may have its own rules โ check with them and with the official site.
Challenge 1: Download one past TOPIK II paper from the official site and sit it under real timing. Score it, then write down the three question types that cost you the most points โ that's your study plan.
Challenge 2: Write a full 54 essay on this prompt in 30 minutes: ์จ๋ผ์ธ ์์ ์ด ๋์ด๋๊ณ ์๋ค. ์จ๋ผ์ธ ์์ ์ ์ฅ์ ๊ณผ ๋จ์ ์ ๋ฌด์์ด๋ฉฐ, ํจ๊ณผ์ ์ธ ์จ๋ผ์ธ ์์ ์ ์ํด ํ์ํ ๊ฒ์ ๋ฌด์์ธ๊ฐ? Then count your characters and check every sentence ends in ํ๋ค์ฒด.
Mock scores go up in steps, not in a smooth line โ it's completely normal to stay flat for a few weeks and then jump ten points in one test. A disappointing practice score isn't a verdict on your Korean; it's a map showing exactly where the next points are hiding.
์ถํํฉ๋๋ค! Think about where you started this tier: switching between ๋ฐ๋ง and ์กด๋๋ง, reporting what people said, reading your first news headline. Since then you have worked through twenty-six lessons โ passives and causatives, the retrospective -๋-, hypotheticals and regrets, humble speech, written style, Sino-Korean roots, idioms, dialects and slang, and now exam strategy. That is the full B1โB2 syllabus, the Korean of TOPIK levels 3 and 4. You can handle life in Korea, hold your own at work, follow the news and argue a point on paper. ์ ๋ง ์๊ณ ๋ง์ผ์ จ์ต๋๋ค!
Can-do checklist โ tick off what you can now do and spot anything worth revisiting.
Glossary โ every word from this tier in one searchable place.
Readings โ reread the passages; you'll be surprised how easy the early ones feel now.
Grammar cheat sheet โ the perfect final review before your TOPIK.
The road from here leads to C1 and TOPIK level 5: reading full newspaper articles and editorials without a dictionary, following lectures and debates, writing essays with nuance and hedging, and using more advanced written grammar such as -(์ผ)ใด/๋ ๋ฐ, -๊ธฐ ๋ง๋ จ์ด๋ค and -(์ผ)ใน ๋ฐ๋ฆ์ด๋ค. The best preparation is the one that feels least like study โ read Korean news every day, listen to podcasts and interviews, and keep writing short ํ๋ค์ฒด opinions about what you read. You have built a real foundation. Now go and use it. ํ์ดํ !
